Sample answer
Maxim begged Frank to take me back home immediately, and so we left him in the courtroom. Frank drove very fast. For the first time since I had known him, he was at a loss for anything to say. That meant that he was very worried. Usually he was such a slow, careful driver, stopping at every crossroads, peering to right and left, blowing his horn at every bend in the road. Now he was driving incredibly fast.
When we finally arrived home, he left me at the front door and drove away at once, insisting that Maxim might need him. Wearily, I went upstairs and lay down on the bed. I kept thinking what people might say. ‘Why should he get off? He murdered his wife – it’s too late now. He will have to hang for it – that would serve him right. Let it be a warning to others.’

Sample answers
Ever since I was a little boy I have been afraid of dogs. I know that’s quite common, but I’m not just afraid, I’m absolutely terrified of them.
It all started when I was two years old. I was playing in our garden when I heard crying. In the grass was a tiny puppy, staring at me. I picked it up to take it inside. Suddenly, from nowhere, a dog came running up to me and knocked me over, took the puppy and ran away.
Later, my mother explained that the dog was the puppy’s mother and was just trying to protect her child. But it was no good, I refused to go near another dog.
Recently my grandmother bought a dog because she said she was lonely on her own. So I have decided I’m going to stop being afraid. Last week I went to visit my grandmother and I played with her dog. I had never felt so nervous in my life, but I knew that I had to do it.
